Baldwin Wallace Sophomore Chosen for Cross Country Trek

Amanda Feairheller '15, from Dayton, is among eight students in the U.S. chosen for the 2013 Ride Against AIDS. She is cycling cross-country to create AIDS awareness and is fundraising as part of the process. 

Amanda is the first student from Ohio chosen for the annual trek.

Baldwin Wallace Professor Wins Grant to Make Science Magic

Who wouldn't be excited about science after witnessing a gummy bear disappearing into a dazzling display of fireworks or "elephant toothpaste" exploding into the air? Those are just two of the tricks in the "Magical Science" show developed by Baldwin Wallace University chemistry department professor Regan Silvestri. Since 2009,  Dr. Silvestri has volunteered to perform “Magical Science” for more than 2,300 young people at schools and other venues.

Now, Dr. Silvestri, in partnership with the Akron Section of the American Chemical Society, has received an American Chemical Society Innovative Projects Grant to create a teacher training program inspired by his "Magical Science" outreach. The program will show elementary, middle and high school teachers how to incorporate appropriate science demonstrations into their curricula, assuring alignment with the academic content standards of the State of Ohio Department of Education.

As Dr. Silvestri says, "Science can be fun, and yes, even entertaining." Additional photos are on the Akron ACS website.

Religion Prof Selected for Summer Dive into Buddhism

Dr. Ellen Posman, professor in Baldwin Wallace University's religion department, is one of 16 national scholars who will be participating in a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar on "Understanding Buddhism Through Its Classic Texts." She plans to use the experience to enhance her BW courses.

Recyclemania Teamwork Produces Baldwin Wallace Win

Take a collective bow, Baldwin Wallace campus community! BW took home first place for "Bottles and Cans" in this year’s RecycleMania competition, topping 244 schools in the U.S and Canada.

RecycleMania is a friendly, eight-week competition that promotes waste reduction at colleges and universities. 

BW ranked 112 of 274 in the Grand Champion division, a huge jump up from last year’s 147 of 266.

While the entire BW community made RecyleMania a success, Tammy Blankenship '15, a sophomore sustainability major from Rocky River, is a leader in BW's green efforts including Students for Environmental Awareness, Farmer Jackets, and Sustainability Committee of Student Senate.

 

Many Moving Moments at AMP1 Challenge

One of many moving moments at the AMP1-BW basketball event last night, came as Ifedimma Nwankwo '16, a BW student who is profoundly deaf, sang and signed the national anthem with students and faculty joining in at the end (video linked above courtesy Marianne Mangen). Ifedimma was an inspiration, as were the stand-up amputees who played basketball, the wheelchair players who performed at half-time and more.

Chinese Middle School Inspires Study Abroad Group Back at BW

The long-lasting impact of one study abroad experience continues to play out for the Baldwin Wallace University students and faculty who traveled together to China in spring of 2012. This year, they have collected enough money to support six students studying for a full semester at the Dandelion School, a highlight of their trip.

The middle school for children of the city's large migrant population made such a profound impression on the group that December 2012 BW graduate, Jordan Kit '12, decided to spend a year volunteering to teach at Dandelion starting this fall. Read more here.

BW Music Theatre Seniors Take the Big Apple by Storm

Applause to Baldwin Wallace University Music Theatre director Vicky Bussert and the 2013 class for success during New York Showcase week. 

• ALL the seniors were called for agent interviews.
• Several students had Broadway and off-Broadway auditions during the week. 
• Two students received over 60 requests for interviews/resumes. 
• Two received calls from Warner Bros. and another from ABC Primetime
• All students received an unsolicited invitation to perform alongside Rita Wilson (Tom Hanks’s wife) at 54 Below, one of the hottest new cabaret clubs in the city.

Honors Students Collect Good Things in Small Packages

Students in BW's Honors Program collected 2,726 personal care items from the notoriously generous BW community. 

The items will go to Trials for Hope, a non-profit outreach program operated through St. Paul’s Community Outreach Center, that offers personal care packages to those in need.

English Major Notches Back-to-Back Success

Applause to BW student poet Matt Gesicki ’14. His poem Lazarus won first place in poetry for the 2013 edition of the literary journal Calliope. His short story The Virgin Martyrs won first place in fiction for the 2012 edition of that same publication.

Delta Zeta Sorority Sisters Help Teens Affected by Cancer

A DZ-sponsored Healing Heels Fashion Show helped collect more than 120 prom dresses and $728 from the BW community. The donations will benefit a local event called “A Prom To Remember,” a prom for teens affected by cancer. http://ow.ly/jXQ2c

BW Accounting/Finance double major Dave Flegel ‘14 talks about leadership opportunities (he’s president of the Accounting Association and a Yellow Jacket football player) and BW’s prime location… that led to multiple summer internship offers. Dave accepted a choice post with an accounting firm regularly named one of the “best places to work.”
