Students Grow their Passion for Sustainability with WWOOF

Sophomore Tammy Blankenship ’16 discovered her passion for organic food growth and sustainability this past summer through a unique opportunity that took her across the U.S. to Kings Valley, Oregon.

After toying with the idea of pursuing organic farming as a future career, Tammy came across World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF), an organization that connects volunteers with organic farms around the world.  WWOOF brought her to a small organic blueberry farm in Kings Valley, Oregon where she spent her summer sleeping in a tent and working on the farm.

Tammy isn’t the only Baldwin Wallace connection to use WWOOF to travel and gain new experiences. Claire Macosko ’13 was recently featured in Sun News for her post-graduation trip to Hawaii to work on an organic coffee farm, and business professor Don Auble enjoyed a summer WWOOF exchange as a ranch hand in Wyoming.

Baldwin Wallace Appoints New Assistant Provost

 

BW has named Dr. Lisa Henderson as Assistant Provost. In her new role, Henderson will coordinate and oversee the offices of Career Services, Explorations, the Honors Program, and the Learning Center, along with other responsibilities.

Henderson joined BW’s Division of Education as an Assistant Professor in 1992, eventually working her way up to a tenured, full professor. She has held the administrative station of Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Division of Education since 2004.

In addition, during the 2012-2013 Academic Year, Dr. Henderson earned the American Council on Education (ACE) Fellowship, which provided a year of focused leadership training and administrative experience.

The BW community welcomes her to this new role and wishes her continued success in her career!

Nurturing a New Generation of Innovators

John P. Lanigan, Director of BW's Center for Innovation and Growth (CIG) graces the cover of Neoconomist Magazine this month.

In a story titled, "Practical Approach, Lanigan describes how BW is succeeding one student at a time, in moving the region's economy forward.

"I'm high on this generation because of what we are seeing here," Lanigan tells the magazine. "They have a strong work ethic, they care and they are serious about achieving."

Lanigan, who retired in January as Executive Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer for BSNF Railway Company, a Berkshire Hathaway company headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, took over as Director of the CIG on May 1.
 

BW Celebrates its First Registered Nurse from the ABSN Program

Lauren Meeks '13 is the first graduate from Baldwin Wallace's new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program to pass the National Council Licensure Examination, officially making her the first Registered Nurse of Baldwin Wallace University. Also sitting for exam and celebrating success were fellow graduates Ashley Wiggers, Nicole Schroeder, Kayla Giannetti, Shana McDade, and Kaleigh Benz, all of whom recently passed their NCLEX.

Physics professor Ed Meyer, BW's resident "personal trainer for the mind," puts his passion for problem-solving into a TED Talk, at a TEDx event organized by Bendix. (This link picks up in the middle of his talk, the full 15-minute talk is embedded below.)

TED Talks are all about "ideas worth spreading." Meyer, who teaches a popular problem-solving course at BW, has spread his message about the need to develop mental fitness through problem solving literally around the world, most recently at a CS4HS conference at Rutgers University. (Photo below)

BW Habitat for Humanity Wins Official Campus Charter

BW has been accepted as an official university for Habitat for Humanity International. Heather Schier '14, who heads up BW's Habitat for Humanity group and helped lead the application process, says gaining the campus charter will allow the group to access additional tools, support and oversight that will further strengthen the BW chapter and "solidify our existence on campus."

Habitat for Humanity is an international service organization that works to help repair and build houses all over the world through volunteer work and donations. The official chapter status will also allow BW a wider selection of alternative break service locations.

International Alum Excels with Sherwin-Williams

Flavio Machiavelli '12, who came to BW's Business Division through its partnership with FAE University of Curitiba, Brazil, is on his way to Sherwin-Williams Brazil supporting the Financial Director for Latin America operations. Machiavelli graduated from BW in December 2012 with four impressive majors in business administration, marketing, finance and management. After graduation, he began working for Sherwin-Williams in Cleveland and parlayed that success into his new post in Sao Paulo.
